The third annual Kentucky and Southern Indiana Academic WorldQuest Competition for area high school students was held March 4 at Bellarmine University. For the second year in a row, DuPont Manual High School emerged as victors and qualified for the National Competition held in early April at the World Affairs Councils of America in Washington, D.C. 2006 was a record year for the competition, sponsored locally by the World Affairs Council of Kentucky/Southern Indiana. Sixteen schools participated from all areas of the metro area and other areas of the state as well.
Academic WorldQuest is a competitive team quiz game invented by former national World Affairs Councils board member Jennifer Watson Roberts and the Charlotte Council. Teams compete in rounds testing their knowledge of international affairs, geography, history, culture, flags, sports, current events, prominent newsmakers, economics, international organizations, and more.
No other national competition covers the same subject area. The program started nationwide in March 2003, but, thanks to a grant from the Metro Louisville Government, the Louisville International Cultural Center and the Louisville World Affairs Council held the first local program in March 2004 with 6 metro area high schools participating. In 2005, the competition grew to include 10 high schools.
Each high school team can be selected by any method that it chooses and includes 4 participating students, an alternate, and a coach. Coaches may be school staff, parents, or council staff.
